EVANSTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The wife of Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was taken to a north suburban police station after she was stopped for speeding in her BMW on Friday morning.

Kristin Cavallari was driving north on Michigan Avenue when an Evanston police motorcycle officer stopped her for speeding near the Chicago border about 11:50 a.m., Evanston police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said.

Cavallari, who has a valid California driver's license, was ticketed for "excessive" speeding in a 30 mph zone, according to Parrott, who declined to say how fast she was going.

California is not a member of the interstate Drivers License Compact, therefore Cavallari was not allowed to sign the ticket and leave the scene, Parrott said. Instead, she was required to follow the officer to the station, where she posted a $150 bond.

The reality TV star-turned-designer Tweeted, "Who knew having a California driver's license in Illinois was a CRIME to be escorted to the police station to post bail?!! What a morning"

Minutes later, she Tweeted that she still has an apartment in Los Angeles, making her a California resident. Parrott said he did not know where Cavallari lives, but confirmed her driver's license had an L.A. address.

Sun-Times Media reported in August that Cavallari and Cutler had rented a home in Winnetka.

Cavallari can pay the $120 ticket, which can be deducted from the bond; pay about $150 and go to traffic safety school for supervision; or challenge the ticket in court, which could mean additional court fees, Parrott said.

Cavallari is most famous for appearing in "The Hills," a Southern California reality show.
