2 dead, 3 firefighters hurt in Sandy Springs blaze

Posted: Updated:

Two people were killed when a fire broke out at a townhome in Sandy Springs about 1 a.m. Monday, authorities said.  Three firefighters also suffered various injuries and were transported to the hospital.

Firefighters say they arrived to find a townhome in flames at North River Parkway and Roswell Road.  Crews found two people inside.
"When they made entry into the unit, we found a male victim on the floor in full cardiac arrest. We aggressively treated him, transported him to an area hospital.  Firefighters went deeper into the unit and found the second victim, a female on the second floor, in full cardiac arrest. [They] initiated treatment with her, too, and transported her to an area hospital, too," said
Sandy Springs Fire Deputy Chief Jeff Scarbrough.

The man and woman did not survive their injuries after being transported to the hospital, according to the Medical Examiner's Office. Their names have not been made public. The woman was in her 80s, while the man was around 50, according to firefighters.

Of the three injured firefighters, one injured his knee, another injured his hand and the third suffered from heat exhaustion, fire officials said. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, but they were transported to the hospital as a precaution.

The fire appeared to have burned itself out by the time fire crew arrived at the townhome, fire officials said.

Investigators believe that the fire started in the kitchen. They said they were unable to find any working smoke detectors.  The cause of the fire has not been determined yet.
