Group exposes prisoners making Facebook posts behind bars

VILLA RICA, Ga. -

A group from Villa Rica is working to expose some prisoners who are illegally making Facebook posts from their prison cells.

According to state law, a cell phone is contraband in prison. Having one could get a prisoner as much as five extra years. Yet Georgia prisoners are getting them and documenting their wild life behind bars on Facebook.

The founder of "The Hoax" Facebook page reposted some pictures posted by inmates and shared them with the Department of Corrections.

"We still receive threats from friends and family members because we posted something that is already public knowledge," said "The Hoax" founder, who asked not to be identified.

The pictures show a seldom-seen life behind bars. From drugs to weapons, the images are stunning.

"We as taxpayers pay taxes to get these criminals off the streets, but what's the point when they still have access to the public? They're in prison for one reason and that's to be locked away from the outside world," said "The Hoax" founder.

But the FOX 5 I-Team found the outside world is pretty easily getting into prison. In February, they reported more than 8,000 cell phones were smuggled into Georgia prisons last year. In at least one case, a phone was used to help set up an armed robbery.

"The problem is that no matter how we feel about it, it's still against the law and there are those who use the cell phone in negative ways," said "The Hoax" founder.

After "The Hoax" posted its first Facebook prisoner, followers tipped them off to more than two dozen more.

"Corrections contacted us via email and asked for us to start sending them all the URL's we had and they thanked us for our diligence in this matter," he said. "We were very excited and happy to help the department."

The Department of Corrections says if a prisoner is found with a phone, he or she is arrested, the phone is taken away and the department asks that they remove their Facebook page.

A spokesperson for the department says prisoners are getting these phones from visitors and prison workers.
