School on lockdown, parents concerned during search for runaway prisoner

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Detroit Public Schools and Detroit Police Department say extra patrols were around the schools in the area where they're searching for runaway prisoner Abraham Pearson. Authorities say several charter schools and as many as five DPS schools are in the area of the search.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. High School was on lockdown during the day.

While authorities insist students were safe, parents are upset about the lack of communication with the school district. They tell Fox 2's Randy Wimbley DPS did not tell them about the lockdown or the hunt for the wanted fugitive.

Fox 2 has received no response yet from DPS regarding the communication about today's events.

Police say Pearson escaped from a holding cell at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice early Monday morning. Police believe he stabbed a sheriff's deputy, stole and put on his uniform, walked out of the courthouse then proceeded to carjack a motorist.
