HGTV'S Cousins Undercover: Cousins On Call

Posted: Updated:

The Kitchen Cousins are back with a new show, Cousins on Call! Real-life cousins and best friends Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri of Brunelleschi Construction are lowering the wrecking ball on outdated, dysfunctional homes, surprising the homeowners with huge renovations that will make all their demo dreams come true.

This hunky designer/contractor duo live in the same building in New Jersey, one flight above Anthony's parents, Alfonso and Francine, who are also involved in the business. This close-knit Italian-American family loves to spend time together, and Anthony's parents are always ready to jump in to help on the latest designs.

Simple Home Tips to Save You Money:

  • Choose in-stock materials, including tile, wood flooring, entry doors, or cabinetry, when remodeling. Retailers want to empty their warehouses, which means you'll pay less for the same quality as special-order stuff.
  • Cost: Fewer choices, but that can be good when you're looking at a thousand different tile options.
  • Savings: $300 or more on home-improvement items.
  • Bonus: Not having to wait three weeks for the product to arrive.
  • Install dimmer switches and use energy-efficient LED bulbs, rather than incandescent, which are being phased out starting January 2014. What's the difference between compact fluorescent(CFL), incandescent, and LED? In short, those squiggly CFL bulbs take a while to turn on, aren't dimmable, and contain mercury - and, while energy efficient, they end up in land fills where the mercury presents an issue. California is yet again leading the nation with a higher standard for energy efficiency - this time it's across the lighting industry. Cree is the first company to meet California's *new* standard of quality and energy efficiency. The Cree TW Series LED bulb also uses 78% less energy than typical incandescent bulbs.
  • Cost: $10 per switch, plus cost of Cree bulb
  • Savings: $20 per fixture on electricity over three years.
  • Bonus: LED tend to outlast incandescents, saving more money over the long haul on replacement lights.
  • Use Low Flow Faucets & Showerheads: In addition to saving water, low-flow fixtures will save you more than a buck or two. Inexpensive and easily installed, low-flow fixtures can reduce your home water consumption by as much as 50 percent and can save you up to $145 per year, according to Energy Star, a government program that promotes energy-efficiency. Low-flow showerheads cost about $20 at home improvement stores.
  • Replace All Air Filters: Replacing the main air filter on your air conditioning unit is a no-brainer that many people simply overlook despite how easy it can be. A clean air filter has a major effect on your monthly cooling and heating bills. Your HVAC unit has to work much harder when it's pushing air through a dirty, dust-filled filter. You spent plenty of money to get an efficient, powerful air conditioner, so why inhibit its effectiveness with a dirty vent? If you don't want to take on the expense of regularly changing your filter, just keep up with regular cleanings. Every three to four months, remove the vent and clear it with a handheld vacuum or a damp rag.
    (IF TIME PERMITS)
  • Install a programmable thermostat or ceiling fan. In the winter, run it at low speed in a clockwise direction to recirculate the warm air that rises to the ceiling. This will allow you to lower the thermostat a couple of degrees.
  • Cost: About $200 for the fan.
