Busy intersection in McDonough pauses for 9/11

Posted: Updated:
MCDONOUGH, Ga. -

A busy McDonough intersection came to a somber standstill on Wednesday as residents marked each of the exact time that the four hijacked planes on September 11th crashed.

Some motorists were moved to tears while others used their mobile devices to capture the moment that the intersection of Hampton Road and Old Industrial Blvd. took pause.

Participants marked each moment that a plane hit the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and finally a field in Pennsylvania.

Air Force veteran John Helton, 91, assisted members of the ROTC in bearing Old Glory in the remembrance ceremony. Helton, who gained national attention in a fight with his homeowner's association to fly the U.S. Flag without penalty, was there to represent members of the military.

"That's one of the things that I was raised up with – the American flag – and I am going to die with the American flag," said Helton.

On Tuesday, Helton was honored as a "Hometown Hero" by the O'Charley's restaurant in McDonough.

McDonough's ceremony echoes many across the nation and across Georgia in the silent cry that they will never forget.
