A 41-year-old man was arrested Sunday after allegedly hitting and dropping a 5-month-old child so hard that she was covered in bruises.

A police report states Michael Richard Gates was caring for a family friend's 5-month-old twins and 3-year-old while staying with them.

The mother of the children was reportedly at work and the father was sleeping when Gates allegedly hit the little girl in the stomach, face, dropping her on the patio, jabbing her in the mouth and swinging her around.

When the father woke up to go to work, the report says he saw Gates on the patio with the 5-month-old girl laying on her stomach. Her face was red, but Gates reportedly told him it was a rash.

When the mother returned home from work, Gates allegedly told her the little girl was having an allergic reaction.

According to the report, the mother saw the bruises on the child's face and took her to the hospital.

The report states the 3-year-old said, "Mike did it, hit face, hit nose."

Gates allegedly admitted to abusing the child and causing all of the bruises that covered her body.

During the alleged abuse, the little girl received a black eye, elevated liver enzymes from trauma and tore part of her mouth.

Gates was arrested and faces a count of child abuse.
