Classmates Defend High School Quarterback's Actions

HAMBERG, Pa. -

Tonight, investigators are trying to figure out if a helmet was used as a violent weapon. The incident in question happened at Annville-Cleona High School in Lebanon County. Their football team was playing the team from Hamburg High School in Berks County. What sparked the fight, according to authorities, was a fumble during the third quarter. Things escalated very quickly after that. The player at the center of all of this is a senior at Hamburg High School.

There's a video that's considered a key piece of evidence for South Annville Police. It was shot Friday night during the game between the Hamburg Hawks and the Annville-Cleona Little Dutchmen.

The safety, Joe Cominsky, who also doubles as quarterback, is shown in the video pulling a helmet off an Annville offensive lineman and hitting him in the head with it twice. That player wasn't seriously hurt, but now police are considering filing criminal charges, not just against Cominsky, but possibly against other players involved in the brawl.

This incident gained a lot of attention across the country, and some Hamburg High students are not happy.

"I think he's being unfairly targeted," said Alanna Engle.

Engle is a football cheerleader and was at the game. She says this clip of video doesn't tell the whole story.

"The helmet came off, guy was at his bad knee and was also hitting, him so his reaction was to go after him," said Engle.

"I think he was just defending himself."

Austin Kershner says he's a friend of Cominsky's.

"If kids were attacking him, gouging out his eyes and trying to take out his surgically repaired knee, I would've done same thing as him," he defended.

No charges have been filed as of yet, but Cominsky and the other player have been suspended for the next game. Cominsky's mother talked to FOX 29's Kelly Hessedal and opined that her son has been receiving a lot of unfair attention.
