Bulger defense costs taxpayers millions

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The cost of representing mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger during his racketeering trial has topped $2 million.

Bulger was represented by public defenders J.W. Carney and Hank Brennan.

The lengthy list of expenses released Friday ranges from around the time of Bulger's June 2011 arrest to June 30, 2013. Friday's list does not include attorney fees and expenses for the months of July and August.

Documents show that $2,424,408.26 has been paid or is approved for payment to date. Between June 30, 2011 and June 30, 2013 Carney billed nearly $2.1 million and Brennan billed more than $314,000. Bulger's original attorney, Peter Krupp, billed $500.

Among the most expensive individual submissions were $139,098.30 for paralegal services and $62,135.26 for investigative services.

Vouchers for another $210,764.96 for service providers and experts as well as $36,158.55 for transcripts has been submitted.

The grand total cost of Bulger's representation is totaled at $2,671,331.77 so far.

Bulger was found guilty on Aug. 12 of racketeering and conspiracy. He is scheduled to be sentenced in November.
