`Weed World` van brings marijuana-flavored candy to Chicago

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Atlanta-based company Weed World Candies rolled into Chicago with a mission: promoting medicinal marijuana.

The makers of the lollipop tell FOX 32 News the sucker will not get you high. For them, Weed World Candies is all about a movement and a way of getting their message out.

"What we do is promote the good of feeling of weed and what it does for ya," says Illina Aching of Weed World Candies.

That "goodness" is sold out of a bright green van that's been driving around Chicago for two weeks, spreading the gospel of the Ganga.

"We are in the middle of the South Loop. This is a college neighborhood so I think they'll make a lot of money," says college student Antonio Johnson.

While parked, workers are selling what they call "pot-infused lollipops" in all different flavors.

"We have AK47 we have Lemon Kush, White Widow, Strawberry Cole, Bubba Kush, Purple Urkle, White Widow---that's my favorite. It tastes like pina colada," Aching explains.

Cute names for suckers, but Weed World Candies is on a mission. They arrived in Chicago when they found out Illinois could become the 20th state to legalize medicinal marijuana.

"We don't promote the abuse of it, we don't promote the smoking of it," Aching says. "We promote candies and they're flavored like marijuana. They taste like marijuana. They won't get you high. They're hemp. They're meant to give you a good feeling, but hemp is really source of protein."

Weed World workers say the suckers are not a gimmick, but they're made with a California hemp. They say the lollipops do not have a trace of THC---the chemical in marijuana that gets users high.

That's why some South Loop residents say the green truck parked in the area--in front of a high-rise where recovering addicts live--has them seeing red.

"This mess right here, these children are already influenced," says Linda Hood, a former drug user. "All this does is give them a new way of getting high to kill each other. This is going to destroy their lives."

"It is not a product. It is not a drug, but number one, Weed World Candies. Bubba Kush, that's marijuana. These are flavored candies," Weed World's owner insists.

When asked if they would move their truck knowing drug users live in the area, Aching told FOX 32 News: "Of course. We don't promote the use of drugs we are against them we promote the edible use for medicine and we promote the use in candy and we try to educate. This is our way of talking to people on the street."

One of the workers says they're only stopped by Chicago police because they're curious. When they find out they're not selling marijuana out of the van, they just want to make sure they have a vendor's license and the van keeps moving.
