Local Navy vet thankful cousin is OK after DC shooting

BREMEN, Ga. -

A Bremen Navy veteran and her family are relieved that their loved one who works at the Navy Yard is safe after a deadly shooting in the nation's capital.

At least 13 people were killed in a shooting at the Washington, D.C. Navy Yard on Monday.

Allison Sanders said that she didn't realize her cousin was in harm's way until her mother called.

"I knew where my cousin worked, I was well aware of what she did and does for a living, but I never really placed two and two together until I got the phone call from my mother," said Sanders.

Sanders wants to protect her cousin's privacy, so she didn't reveal her name. Although the 28-year -old was not injured, Allison worries about her cousin's psychological health following the shooting rampage.

"As a family, we are still worried about her recovering from this. I can only imagine the horrors that she heard and saw," Sanders said.

Sanders conceded that preventing a mass shooting is rather difficult, but she said she would like to see military service members carry their weapons to work.

"I honestly believe that more law-abiding, trained and mentally stable people need to carry," she said.
