University of Minnesota police warn of armed robberies in Marcy-Holmes

School is back in session, Dinkytown is bustling again, but more traffic can mean more crime on a college campus. Following a recent string of robberies at gunpoint in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood, University of Minnesota police have issued a crime alert reminding students and faculty to take caution.

Three robberies occurred in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood just north of Dinkytown in just four days. The most recent occurred early Sunday morning when a group of six men confronted four people who were not affiliated with the U of M on the corner of 13th Avenue SE and 8th Street SE, according to Minneapolis police reports.

One alleged robber threatened a victim with a gun, and two of the victims told FOX 9 News by phone they resisted the group, which lead to a fight. That's when a shot was fired into the air and near a victim's head.

Alex German and Marcus Mauer said their roommate witnessed the scuffle from their house and saw people darting to cars in an effort to escape.

The most recent robbery took place hours after two women were grabbed from behind six blocks to the west of the Sunday shooting. Police reports said two men pulled a gun on the victims at the corner of 5th Avenue SE and 7th Street SE late Saturday night and demanded the victims surrender their purses. When one victim didn't comply, one of the men hit her and made off with the purses, according to police reports.

On Thursday night, a University student and friend were robbed near the corner of 11th Avenue SE and 7th Street SE after six men surrounded them, threatened them with a gun and stole a purse.

Minneapolis police data reports eight aggravated assaults have occurred in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood from January to August this year.
