Daley: Exit from race doesn't mean I couldn't win

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Former White House chief of staff Bill Daley says his decision to drop out of the 2014 gubernatorial race doesn't mean he couldn't beat Gov. Pat Quinn.

Daley told reporters Tuesday he thinks he had enough support - including downstate - and fundraising ability. But he says he didn't realize the "enormity" of being a candidate.

Despite dropping out, Daley continues to blame much of Illinois' ills on what he called Governor Quinn's lack of leadership -- and declined to endorse him. He says Quinn is also likely to lose to a Republican in November next year.

Daley himself has never run for office before--and it shows. Daley was lampooned for wearing starched shorts and a blue dress shirt in a county fair livestock barn, just one of the surprising rookie mistakes he has made.

On the Republican side, the GOP's 2010 nominee for governor introduced his running mate. McLean County State Senator Bill Brady chose Maria Rodriguez, former mayor of Northwestern Suburban Long Grove.

The brother and son of two longtime Chicago mayors got choked up as he described his family's service to politics and his decision to step aside.

He says he didn't base it on any single issue.

Daley says he'll return political contributions and return to the private sector.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
