DETROIT, Mich. (AP) -

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation says it's giving $3.6 million to a new group promoting black men's involvement in building communities.
The Miami-based foundation announced Tuesday that it is giving the grant to the organization BMe.
Trabian Shorters is a former vice president of the Knight Foundation and founder of BMe.  He says millions of black men from all walks of life "are assets to their communities" and says the group seeks to engage them "around the things they care about."
Detroit BMe leader Shaka Senghor says the group isn't based on a "missionary mentality" but rather on the effort to get the resources needed to "do the work."
