State Senator Proposes New Plastic Bag Tax

Posted: Updated:

Paper or plastic? We've all been asked that question at the supermarket. But soon, you may opt for paper. There's a new proposal in Pennsylvania to charge consumers two cents for every plastic bag they take home, and that has some shoppers angry.

"I think it's terrible. I don't spend enough in here," says Prudence Harvey, coming out of the grocery store.

Just think of how many plastic bags you leave the grocery store with. How would you like to pay a two cent tax for every one of them?

"It's not a lot of money, but it could be to someone who's on a fixed income," says Yvonne Crews.

"I'm against it. I'm against it. We need our plastic bags. We shouldn't have to pay for them," says Mariama Whack.

But state senator Daylin Leach believes a tax could deter people from using them. He claims that way too many plastic bags are fill up our landfills, and charging people could encourage folks to choose a more environmentally friendly option.

The bill was sent to committee this week. If the bill becomes law, Pennsylvania would be the first state in the country to put a fee on the bags. Cities like Los Angeles and Santa Fe actually ban them.

"I hate using paper bags, they break," says another shopper.

"I have a bag full of plastic bags at home just like everyone else," says another shopper.

But there are some that believe a tax is the right way to go.

"If they want to tax me and do something good with it, I'm all for it," says Joe Kaufman.

A lot of people also tell FOX 29 that they actually use these bags for other things like picking up after their dogs. Others say that they use them as trash bags.

And also, what would the money be used for? Senator Leach says the money generated from this tax would go toward recycling programs.

We'll keep you posted on what happens with it.
