PHOENIX -

Light rail stations around the valley are becoming a safe place for teens to go if they need help.

Valley Metro is partnering with Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development to turn light rail stations into a place where homeless or desperate teens can go for help.

"Safe Place" is a national effort that provides help and safety for teens ages 17 and under who are in distress.

Teens will be able to go to any light rail station and get in contact with a Tumbleweed volunteer who will help them find somewhere to stay, counseling or reunite them with family.

Although several bus agencies across the US are part of the Safe Place program, Valley Metro's light rails will be the second in the country to join.

Plus, the light rail will be the first to use cameras and emergency call boxes as part of the program.

Valley Metro's Safe Place program officially starts on Wednesday.
