Victims, families rally for peace after park shooting spree

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The community is on the move Friday night in response to Thursday night's park shooting. At St. Sabina, Father Michael Pfleger led the weekly march against violence and another march and vigil was held for the victims at 66th and King.

Semehca Nunn's grandson was the youngest victim struck in Thursday night's shooting.

"They better get these national guards out here," Nunn said. "Anybody with a background, even got a gun background, y'all need to go in these people's houses, warrants, whatever and clear it out."

"I know my grandson wasn't the target. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time but if you have any type of sympathy or heart, you'll turn yourself in," she pleads

She and the child's mother, along with other victims, came together at a peace and prayer rally at Pastor Corey Brooks' New Beginnings Church.

"Whoever did this, you need to get your life together because whoever, you're wrong," 33-year-old victim Niesha Brannon said. "You see kids out there, little kids and you do that, you don't have a heart at all."

Mayor Rahm Emanuel prayed with a community searching for answers.

"Last night is too frequent and too familiar for some children in Chicago," Emanuel said. "That has to come to an end. We cannot allow children in the city of Chicago and we will not allow children in the city of Chicago to have their youthfulness, optimism and hope taken from them."

Pastor Corey Brooks is urging the gunman to turn himself in and break the cycle of retaliation even if it means coming to the church.

"When you do that, you do run the risk of being stigmatized as a gangbanger pastor or a gangbanger or hood pastor and things like that but we cannot let the titles that people put on us limit us from the things that we have to do," Brooks said.

At Saint Sabina, Father Michael Pfleger and former NBA star and coach Isiah Thomas marched at his weekly peace rally.

It's the last one of the summer - a season many will remember for all the wrong reasons.
