ATLANTA -

The avid golfer might appreciate a new device that was invented right here in Atlanta that answers the simple questions everyone who takes a swing wants to know: How far did my ball go?

Atlanta businessman Joe Ernest continued to have that same questions and couldn't find something that could answer it simply or cheaply. So, he had to ask another question first: Can I create a device that does that?

The answer comes in the form of the ES12 portable launch monitor, a device that recently won the PGA's Best in Show award.

It uses Doppler radar, similar technology that the FOX 5 Storm Team uses to track storms, to track how far a ball has been hit. It then connects through a smartphone app so golfers can actually hear the results.

It's not just the distance it tracks, but also the flight of the ball. So, you can actually view a graphic on your smartphone or tablet. It also lets you record your swing to email friends or a pro for analysis.

And if you need an experience caddy, it can actually give you advice on what club to use. Of course, it just can't hand it to you. But at least it will keep score for you.

The 68-year-old Ernest retired a few years ago from the telecommunications industry here in Atlanta which helped him in the development of the ES12.

The ES12 prices for around $250. The app is free and available for both Apple and Android devices including tablets.
