The City of Bakersfield is one step closer to having an anti-abortion resolution. A council committee approved 2-1 a resolution that would support groups that promote alternatives to abortion. This is a victory for the anti-abortion groups but a step back from the more strongly worded ordinance that would have restricted abortion in Bakersfield. The city attorney said the ordinance was unconstitutional and would open the city up to legal scrutiny and lawsuits. The resolution still needs the full council to vote. That could happen October 16. The city attorney said the resolution is more policy statement and not enforceable like land use resolutions.
