2-Year-Old Colton Boy Fatally Mauled By Dogs

Posted: Updated:
Colton, CA -

How would you solve the problem of Pit Bull related deaths? Jeff Michael and KABC's Larry Elder weigh-in in 3rd Video Above.

From Christina Gonzalez:

Colton police first got the call that a "person" had been attacked by dogs on the 700 block of Citrus. They didn't expect the person to be 2-year-old toddler, let alone the dogs to be five adult pit bull mixes, in a back yard with as many as ten dogs.

The victim, identified as Samuel Eli Zamudio was supposedly under the care of his grandmother, Estolia Zamudio, who owns the house. Seems the boy was left alone in a bedroom, and proceeded to climb out the window, right onto the dog filled back yard.

Erica Vega, who rents a room at the house, says they were looking for the child, and when the grandmother realized he might be outside, she started screaming. "I ran outside,"  adds Vega, " but he was dead".

The grandmother and an uncle identified as Marco Antonio Zamudio were arrested and are being charged with felony child endangerment, leading to the death of the child.

"But they were friendly dogs" mutters Vega..."I am waiting to wake up from a bad dream"

"Who leaves any 2 year old alone? Let alone in a house with dogs?" That from LA SPCA president Madeline Bernstein. She fears the incident will once again target pit bulls and pit mixes, when any five dogs could have reacted badly in the same situation. "We once had a Pomeranian kill a baby, granted a baby is tiny," she goes on, " but concentrating on the particular breed doesn't help solve or prevent these situations"

SPCA la recommends NO child under 7 years of age be left alone with any dog, let alone with a pack of any breed of dogs.

San Bernardino animal control officials have seized the dogs, saying they will be destroyed.

The Story From Gigi Graciette:

Kids, seniors and animals.

You just don't mess with kids, seniors or animals. They are to be taken care of and protected. At least in my book they are.

Today's story brings together both children and animals in what turned out to be a deadly combination.

A precious child is dead and a family is torn apart.

And once again, an entire dog breed is being blamed for a horrific act.

There will be time to talk about pit bulls later. There is much to say but now is not the time.

A child is dead and nothing will change that.

His name was Samuel Eli Zamudio and he was only two years old. Two; oh-so-little when yesterday, while at his grandmother's home in Colton he just disappeared.

Erica Vega, a family friend who rents a room in the home, told me that Samuel's uncle Marco knocked on her door looking for the toddler and she joined in the search. They looked everywhere; even going to the neighbor's to see if he had somehow walked over there.

But he was nowhere to be found until his grandmother noticed an open bedroom window, looked out into the backyard and suddenly began screaming.

It was more of a wail. Yes, she began wailing, I am told.

Erica rushed to look out the window and saw the reason. There in the rear of the dirt yard laid Samuel.

She rushed out but it was too late.

Samuel Eli was dead.

His lifeless body showing obvious signs that he had been mauled in what appeared to have been a vicious attack by the five pit bull mixes in the backyard.

Or were the dogs, who the family says never attacked anyone and weren't aggressive, simply "playing" with the toddler? Witnesses say they didn't hear any screams, cries or even the dogs barking.

No matter, little Samuel didn't stand a chance either way. Friends say they estimate it had been a good thirty minutes since anyone had last seen the child.

The dogs were taken away by animal control and after questioning the family, detectives with Colton Police came to the conclusion that in a house full of adults, no one had been in charge of the little boy so they arrested both his grandmother and uncle.

Eustolia and Marco Antonio Zamudio  will be charged with felony child endangerment that led to the death of Samuel Eli. Their bail has been set at $100,000 each.

The dogs – the dogs will be put down, according to the family, in 40 days by animal control.

So much to say – not the time nor the place to say it.

Kids and animals.

You just don't mess with kids or animals. They are to be taken care of and protected.

At least in my book they are.

(FOX 11 / AP) Colton police say a 2-year-old boy has been fatally mauled by as many as five dogs. Police say the attack took place about 5:30 p.m. Monday at a home in Colton.

Officers answering a call of a dog attack found the boy had been severely bitten on his upper body. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to a statement from the Colton Police Department, animal control authorities took five dogs from the home. All of the animals were believed to be Pit Bull mixed breeds.

The boy's name was not released, and police say they don't know what prompted the attack.

Anyone with information about the attack was asked to contact authorities.
