SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

A 1-year-old boy who was left in a car for hours on Saturday has passed away, and his father faces second degree murder.

28-year-old Brokale Lytte Marques was originally charged with child abuse and endangerment after his 1-year-old son was found in a lethargic state at the Scottsdale Quarter shopping area.

Authorities say Marques told investigators he left the baby in a car seat because he was unable to find a sitter.

Marques said he left the vehicle running and the air conditioning on while he went to work, but later turned it off.

According to investigators, "He did not believe it was good for the car's engine to be left running for an extended period of time, so he decided to turn the car off."

At 10:30 p.m. Monday, life sustaining measures were discontinued. Police requested the second degree murder charge afterwards.

"Very quickly, inside of a car, temperatures can quickly get to 120 or 130 degrees," said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery at a press conference Tuesday.

"For small children, especially infants who cannot regulate their body temperature, you are basically cooking your kid so don't do it."

Marques saw a judge in reference to the new charge Tuesday morning.

Marques does not yet have an attorney. He told the judge he can't afford it. Investigators say he makes $90,000 a year.

"The money that I had made I don't have anymore," Marques told the judge. "I can't afford an attorney. I'm no longer working and the money I made I spent."

A cash-only $500,000 bond has been set for Marques.

His older brother told police he was home all day, and could've watched the baby.
