Safety of new APD patrol cars questioned

ATLANTA -

Some Atlanta police officers are questioning the safety of their new patrol cars.  There have been complaints from officers that they are having trouble seeing out of the rear view mirrors.

Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Erika Shields said that some changes may be forthcoming, but stressed that the new patrol cars don't pose a danger on the streets.

"We recognize that we may need to reconfigure some items on it to provide better visibility, but in saying that, at no point do we feel this is a safety issue or that the safety of our officers or constituents are being compromised," said Shields.

Shields said that the department is going through a period of adjustment after Ford stopped production of the Crown Victoria.

"The Crown Victoria spoiled us. It was a beast, it was indestructible. It had tons of room," Shields said.

An additional safety concern of the new specifically designed police vehicle is the available space in the rear to place a suspect.

"Regardless of what vehicle we went to, there was going to be less room in the back for prisoner transport and to offset this issue, we are actually in the fiscal year ‘14 budget ordering more prisoner transport wagons for every zone," Shields said.

In reviews, officers said that the new patrol cars ride well.

Authorities are monitoring maintenance. So far, five cars have been returned for repairs. Shields said that she sees nothing alarming in the number of repairs so far.
