Blue Cross Blue Shield employees alerted of Ren Cen crime

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

All Blue Cross Blue Shield employees in Detroit received an email that reads in part:

"One of our employees was the victim of an armed attempted purse snatching on Atwater Street east of St. Antoine. Two suspects pulled up in a van while the employee was walking along the street. The van passenger jumped out with a handgun and attempted, unsuccessfully, to steal the employee's purse. The employee was not injured and the suspects fled. The incident is under investigation by the Detroit Police Department. A video from a nearby security camera is being reviewed by investigators. Renaissance Center has notified us that it will increase its security presence as a result of the incident."

Some employees say they were also briefed in a meeting Wednesday.

An employee tells Fox 2's Ron Savage the email has definitely got employees talking. "We're aware of it and we are walking together, or we are on the shuttle," Josephine Hafeli says.

A Michigan Blue Cross spokesperson gave a comment to Fox 2 saying:

"Regardless of where our employees work in the state of Michigan, we are concerned about their safety and this was our effort to share information about safety."

Detroit police could not be reached for comment, but say they are reviewing our request to talk about the story. Meanwhile, as mentioned in Blue Cross's email, police are investigating the incident and looking at that surveillance video of the attempted robbery.
