Obama responds to ObamaCare attack ads

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

President Obama took the unusual step of responding directly to TV ads attacking his Affordable Care Act on Thursday.

The spots have generated buzz. One features a young woman -- another, a young man. Each strips down for a routine medical checkup.

Then a creepy-looking Uncle Sam suddenly appears.

The ads aim a dagger at the financial heart of ObamaCare, young adults who will help pay for it. If you don't want Uncle Sam as your gynecologist or proctologist, warns the final screen, then "Opt out of Obamacare" health insurance.

When the President fired back, he also aimed at Charles and David Koch, who gave a reported $5 million to the group airing the ad.

"Some of the wealthiest men in America are funding a cynical ad campaign trying to convince young people not to buy health care at all. Now, think of it, these are billionaires several times over. You know they've got good health care," Obama said.

One of the ads that provoked the president shows a checkup going well, until the doctor notices a young man's health insurance.

"Oh, and I see you're new to ObamaCare, as well," the doctor in the ad says. "Yeah. I saw the ads. And I figured, 'Why not,'" the patient responds

The doctor's disgusted look is the only warning that the prostate exam will now be different.

The young adults targeted by the ads do, in fact, hold the financial key to ObamaCare because they need few medical services, premiums they pay will cover the costs of older and sicker Americans. One analyst estimated that, for 2014, the Administration's counting on at least 765,000 in the 18-34 year old age group to get an ObamaCare policy or else, insurance rates may have to rise across the board.

Even as the President sought to sell his plan at a community college campus in Maryland, a West Suburban Republican was on the House Floor warning that what he's seen so far in his district is not encouraging.

"I tried to meet with one of Illinois' so-called "navigators." But they said they weren't ready to show me how to sign up for healthcare-their navigators were still getting trained up. With less than a week left," Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Illinois, said.

The president said there likely would be problems, but downplayed their significance.

"Somewhere around the country, there's going to be a computer glitch and the website's not working quite the way it's supposed to, or something happens where there's some error made somewhere -- that will happen. That happens whenever you roll out a new program," Obama said.

The group behind Creepy Uncle Sam, Generation Opportunity, plans a Down with ObamaCare tour of 20 college campuses this fall. They'll set up right next to pro-Obamacare activists such as Enroll America that are working to sign people up for the insurance exchanges.
