USC head coach fired after Sun Devils defeat Trojans 62-41

TEMPE, Ariz. -

The Sun Devils defeated the USC Trojans in front of some 64,000 fans at Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday.

But the news wasn't so good for USC's head coach, who was fired after the game.

The way the school did it has a lot of people talking.

The Sun Devils burned USC Saturday night and handed them an embarrassing loss of 62 to 41. That's the most points Arizona State has ever scored against USC.

You can only imagine what the plane flight was like heading back to southern California after the game.

Some reports have even surfaced that the decision to fire Lane Kiffin was made in the third quarter after the team had given up 28 straight points.

Several sources say USC officials didn't wait until sunrise to fire Lane Kiffin.

As soon as Kiffin and the Trojans landed back in southern California, Kiffin was pulled aside in the airport parking lot by USC athletics director, Pat Haden, and told he was fired.

Before the season started, Haden said that he was behind Kiffin 100 percent, but that all changed after Saturday night's loss.

Haden made the announcement official Sunday afternoon.

"He really worked under some difficult NCAA sanctions, no doubt about it. If you watched our game last night and saw Robbie play the second half as a wide receiver, you understand some of the challenges we had with our roster and lane never once complained about it, lived with it and did the absolute best he can," said Haden.

Kiffin spent four years with the Trojans collecting a 28 and 15 record.

He left Tennessee after one season to become the Trojans' head coach.

Before that, he was fired as the Raiders' head coach by the late Al Davis.

Trojans assistant coach Ed Orgeron will assume the tag as interim head coach.

USC's next game is on Oct. 10 against the University of Arizona.
