Mayor: Taste of Chicago profitable for first time in six years

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

This summer's revamped Taste of Chicago festival was profitable for the first time since 2007, the mayor's office announced Sunday.

The festival made $272,000 in profit and generated about $106 million in total business to the city's economy, according to a statement from the mayor and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

"This year at the Taste we brought exciting new options together with timeless favorites and the result was an outstanding five day festival," Michelle T. Boone, commissioner of DCASE, said in the statement.

The Taste included several new changes this year — it ran for a shorter period of time and included pop-up restaurants, food trucks and evening concerts, the statement said.

"I am pleased to see that the Taste is proving to be popular, with higher attendance this year and its first profit since 2007," Mayor Emanuel said in the statement.

The 2014 Taste, which is already being planned, is scheduled for July 9-13 in Grant Park.
