WASHINGTON -

If you're planning a visit to a national park or the Smithsonian in D.C., you will be out of luck. Tourist attractions like the Lincoln Memorial, Statue of Liberty, and Alcatraz will be closed until Congress reaches a deal.

Many of the country's 2.1 million federal workers will also be affected. In all, 800,000 federal employees could be furloughed when the shutdown happens. Nearly half of civilian defense workers will be out of work, and while 1.4 million active-duty military members will remain on the job, they would face pay delays.

Americans hoping to secure a government-backed mortgage will also have to wait. The Federal Housing Administration will not approve or underwrite any new loans without a budget agreement.

Some services will still be available after the government shuts down.

The post office will deliver mail, and those receiving Medicare and social security will continue to get benefits, although new applications may be delayed. Unemployment checks will also still go out.

You also won't have to worry about air travel safety with air traffic controllers and airport security screeners staying on the job, and passport applications will continue to be processed.

And you will still have to pay taxes, even though the IRS will be suspending audits and closing its help phone lines.
