Wayne Co. Prosecutor Kym Worthy to endorse Benny Napoleon for mayor

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy will endorse Sheriff Benny Napoleon Tuesday as her pick for Detroit's next mayor. The endorsement comes at a time when polls show fellow candidate Mike Duggan is beating Napoleon in the polls 2 to 1, with 30 percent of the voters still undecided.

Political Consultant Steve Hood says the endorsement could sway the minds of some of those undecided voters. "Kym Worthy embodies law and order, and Detroit is lawless," Hood tells Fox 2's Alexis Wiley.

"She knows that I understand what it is to work on public safety issues. She knows that I know that this problem is fixable," Napoleon says.

In response to Worthy's endorsement Duggan says, "He got a good endorsement, and I congratulate him on that."

Worthy was preparing to run against Duggan for prosecutor 10 years ago before he left to run the DMC. When Worthy became prosecutor in 2004 she requested Wayne County's auditor general conduct an audit of the office while it was under Duggan. The report points to more than 800 thousand dollars worth of contracts that were never submitted for bid or approved by the county commission. In this document, Worthy called the report extremely disturbing.

Now, nine years later, the report has resurfaced, but no one is willing to publicly talk about it - except Mike Duggan.

"At the time, I asked both the auditor general and the county commission to please share the document so I could respond, and they told me 'never mind.' So it's a nine-year-old report, and I have yet to see the documentation behind it," Duggan explains.

Duggan also says Worthy told him she was endorsing Napoleon weeks ago, and that he has no hard feelings. He says, "I think she's doing a fine job and we have a good relationship."
