Good Day Talks About Domestic Violence Awareness

Posted: Updated:

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Nearly one in four women and one in nine men have been affected by domestic violence. Millions of kids are affected too. So how can we help our teens, loved ones and friends? Or maybe you're in a scary situation.

Survivor and State Senator Leanna Washington and Executive Director Of Women Against Abuse Jennine Lisitski were on Good Day.

Leanna shared her story. 45-47 years ago, according to Leanna, she was the victim of domestic violence. Now she wants to inform women of the resources available today that were not available back in the day.

Lisitski recommended that anyone suffering from abuse call the Philadelphia domestic abuse hotline. 1-866-723-3014. The hotline is open 24/7. They have a variety of resources for victims.

One of the key missions that both these individuals want to do is to educate people on what a healthy relationship is. Not only does domestic violence affect adults and teens, it also affects how kids model their behavior, so Leanna told Good Day that we're even seeing cases of middle schoolers in relationships abusing each other.

The guests also spoke of the I Pledge Campaign. IT is happening today in LOVE Park. There will be a walk and fundraiser to raise money for the 24 hour hotline. The pledge can also be accessed at

Also, on October 19th, Mike Jerrick is hosting a "Man Up" event. It's a Saturday afternoon event for Men Against Domestic Violence.
