The Detroit Police Department says its changing its policy for carrying out a raid. The changes can not be disclosed at this time, but they come less than 24 hours after a house was raided while school children were playing outside across the street.
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Detroit Police Department confirms a house on Santa Rosa Drive was raided Tuesday afternoon across the street from Pasteur Elementary School.

It is believed school officials were not made aware of the raid beforehand and, consequently, students were outside on the playground at the time when the raid began. Teachers instructed students inside once they saw what was happening. On their way inside the building students heard the sound of gunshots.

DPD has now confirmed those shots were fired because officers had to put down two dogs.

The school's principal, Sharon Lawson, sent a note to parents and guardians saying:

"Today at lunchtime, the police did a raid at a house across from the school. When we saw   the police at the house, we quickly signaled for the students on the playground to be brought into the school. As students were coming in, they heard shots and some started to run into the school. All the students were safe and accounted for. If you have any concerns or questions, please contact the office."

Detroit Public Schools also released a statement saying:

"The safety and security of our students and staff is one of our top priorities at Detroit Public Schools. When any incident occurs we follow our safety protocols to ensure that no harm comes to those in our charge, and the school promptly notified parents of this event."
- Jen Mrozowski, DPS spokeswoman

Fox 2 reached out to DPD inquiring about any policy to notify a school in advance before such events. DPD responded:

"Our raid followed the proper procedure and protocol. DPD executives have reached out to the school's principal regarding this issue."

At this time it is unclear if that communication between DPD and school officials was before or after the raid took place.
