ACA Sign Up Will Get Easier

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

That's the promise from the head of Covered California, the state's health care exchange.  Peter Lee says that the website www.coveredca.com got 5 million hits on the first day for sign up.  That slowed the system down and so overnight; the website will shut down for tweaking.  He tells people not to be discouraged and not to feel rushed about choosing a plan.  It will take some studying.  There are four different plans with different premiums, deductibles and co-pays.  And, there are as many as 12 different health insurance companies to choose between.

The good news is the enrollment period runs from October 1, 2013 to March 31, 2014.  However, the start up of ACA is January 1, 2014.  To get coverage on day one, you'll need to sign up before mid-December.

If you don't have access to a computer, call 800 300 1506.  But there were some hiccups there, too.  Some people waited as long as half an hour before they could talk to an advisor.

Remember, California's ACA applies to those who have NO health insurance currently.  If you're already enrolled in Medi-Care, no need to visit or call Covered California.  You should know, though, that ACA benefitted Medi-Care clients as well, with improved preventative care and prescription drug benefits.

For residents of Los Angeles, Mayor Garcetti encourages the estimated two million without insurance to sign up.  He says everyone will benefit, even those who already have health insurance.  He claims, if everyone who can get insurance does, it will help bring down medical costs.  Critics take issue with that claim, but Garcetti says if there are fewer people going to the emergency room and racking up thousands of dollars in bills, leaving them unpaid, medical care costs will stabilize and go down.
