Open Enrollment For Obamacare

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

If you don't have insurance, open enrollment has started for the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

Americans have until March 31st of 2014 to sign up at healthcare.gov. Millions already have signed up since yesterday.

However, there are still many questions about the Affordable Care Act. Health care expert Dr. Robert Field of Drexel University was on Good Day to help answer them.

Dr. Field describes the process as a sort of like Travelocity, but with health care.

"You create an account, it asks basic information, where you live, what your income is, how old you are, and it will give you a menu of options just like it would give you a menu of different flights."

The cost will depend on your age, where you live, and your type of plan.

Dr. Field also warns that your network of doctors and hospitals is one of the most important factors in choosing your health care. Make sure that the doctor and hospital you want are included in your plan.

The act does not affect those who already have insurance through employers or through Medicare and Medicaid. Co-pays will not go up, he emphasized. The people affected are those who get coverage directly through an insurance company or those with pre-existing conditions who weren't able to get coverage before.

The Affordable Care Act requires everybody to get insurance. If you do not register, you will be penalized on your tax return.

Dr. Field is releasing a book, "Mother of Invention," about the role of the government in healthcare.
