Gleaners food bank feeling effects of govt. shutdown

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

Gleaners Community Food Bank provides more than one-hundred thousand meals a day by distributing food to more than 500 soup kitchens, shelters and pantries.

But now, during the government shutdown, the non-profit is bracing itself for possibly even more residents who may be needing help.

The greater need for food would come from people who, during the shutdown, can no longer depend on government programs for food.

"What happens when people can't use food stamps at the store? Well the stores are making a lot less money. The stores make less money, they're going to lay people off, and that creates a cascading impact," Gerry Brisson from Gleaners says.

"If this lasts a week it's not going to be as big a deal for them, but if this lasts three weeks, a month, a month and a half - which we hope it doesn't - it could be a big issue," Alan Whitman says. Whitman is a managing partner at Baker Tilly, an agency that works with many local non-profits including Gleaners.

Brisson continues: "We're concerned for sure. We're watching all this very carefully and we're going out to the public pretty strongly now to say - let's be prepared for whatever happens."
