The legend of the Tomahawk Chop

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It's tradition. It gives a sense of pride. And when 50,000 people do the Tomahawk Chop at Atlanta Braves games, it can be spectacular.

Most people believe that the tradition began in the early 1990's, when Deion Sanders played for the Braves. Legend has it, the chop followed him from Florida State, where he went to college.

Now it's part of the Braves identity. At Turner Field, several signs welcome fans to "Choptober."

"It's electric. It's amazing. They had it for a game last year where everybody got ones that were lit up with lights and stuff like that," said Devin Bosarge.

Fans believe the chant to be haunting to the visiting team. At the very least, they hope it's unnerving.

"I find it so funny that so many people are jealous of the chop, they hate it. But obviously they hate it, because it dominates games," said one fan.

And just maybe, the chop -- which some fans say is a million times better than any wave or song pumped through another stadium's PA -- actually helps the Braves on the field.
