Furloughed workers give back with volunteer work at Martha's Table

WASHINGTON, DC -

Federal workers, who are not on the job, are still finding a way to serve the public. Some are spending this government shutdown doing volunteer work.

"We're lucky to have 10,000 volunteers, but what we've seen in the last few days is an enormous surge in federal employees," says Patty Stonesifer, CEO of Martha's Table.

Martha's Table distributes meals and groceries to 20,000 homeless and low-income people each year. Dolly Garcia volunteers at the non-profit several times a month. She is a geographer at the Census Bureau and now has even more volunteer time.

Even though she's not getting paid: "It feels good to give back to the community and to do something to be productive, not just sitting at home watching TV," says Garcia.
