NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - A stretch of 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan has been reopened after crews managed to lower and secure a construction crane that had malfunctioned and was dangling above the ground.

The tower crane was hoisting a load at about 11:30 a.m. when it apparently got stuck about 20 floors up, reports the AP.

The NYPD closed off West 57th St. between 9th Avenue and Madison Avenue to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for a few hours. Police reopened the street at about 3:30 p.m.

The construction site at 157 W. 57th St. was the scene of another crane malfunction last October.

The crane was damaged during superstorm Sandy. Workers replaced the boom that almost broke off during the powerful storm.

Residents in a nearby building were forced to evacuate for several days.

Monday's dangling crane could have posed significant danger as winds picked up while the Tristate region was under a Tornado Watch.

The Dept. of Buildings has advised property owners and contractors to safely secure anything that could become a hazard during the Tornado Watch.
