CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A Chicago high school football player is in the hospital with a serious brain injury he suffered in a game. Star Lane Tech athlete Drew Williams is in intensive care Wednesday morning.

Williams, 17, collapsed on the sideline during the Friday night game versus Dunbar at Gately Stadium.

He was rushed to the hospital. Doctors determined he suffered a subdural hematoma. He had an emergency craniotomy to remove a portion of his skull and reduce the swelling in his brain. He was placed in a medically-induced coma.

There's no word from Chicago Public Schools on what exactly triggered Williams' collapse, but he remains in critical condition Wednesday morning.

CPS chief Barbara Byrd-Bennett has talked with Williams' family.

Hearts were heavy at Lane Tech Wednesday morning, as students hope and pray for Williams' speedy recovery. Support for Williams and his family has poured out on Facebook and Twitter, with one saying, "The entire lane student body and staff are pulling for you."

A fundraising website has been set up for Drew Williams. If you'd like to donate, visit the page here.
