CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Have you heard of the Memorial Militia? Probably not. But a South Carolina man, the only member of this volunteer group, is on a mission.

Chris Cox is determined to clean up the National Mall while National Park Service employees remain unpaid due to the government shut down. He says it is just the right thing to do.

"These are our memorials," Cox told All-News 99.1 reporter John Domen. "Do they think we're just going to let them go to hell? If they shut down our memorials, we're still going to take the trash out."

Since the Million Vet March is scheduled to take place this Sunday, he wants the memorials to be clean and presentable for the men and women coming to honor the fallen.

He's taking the time to clear a fallen tree near the WWII Memorial reflecting pool and mow the Lincoln Memorial lawn with a gasoline powered push-mower.

National Park Police kept clear of Cox when he started cleaning, because no one told them they had to stop him. Due to liability issues, they had to stop him eventually. Cox didn't put up a fight.

But Cox hopes more people will join his cause He hopes more people will volunteer their time while the shutdown continues, so that the veterans can visit a clean memorial this weekend.
