Woman denied bear relocation after bear kills pet pigs

Posted: Updated:

A Ft. McCoy woman says she wants a bear relocated, after it killed her two pet pigs.

Suzanne Marcantoni is broken hearted, after she says a bear killed her two pet pigs. "[The bear] squashed it down and reached into the chicken house and pulled it back," she said. The pigs are named Polka Dotty and Sweetie. "They were pets just like my bloodhound," Suzanne says. She taught them to do tricks and play with her grandchildren. She added: "They were very happy here, their favorite food was red velvet cake."

Knowing they were dragged 30 ft into the woods screaming, scares her. "The paw is right here and my pigs footprints are right here," Suzanne says.  She called Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officers, hoping they would relocate the bear, but was told that won't happen. She lives next to the Ocala National Forest.

FWC spokesperson Karen Parker says officers advised Suzanne to put up some electric fencing around her area. The material costs $100 and the spokesperson said they could come out and assist in putting the fence together. But Suzanne says, "They never offered that, they said what we needed to do was put up an electrical fence. We told them I couldn't do it till pay day."

Suzanne also has a pet chicken which she now plans to keep inside the house for safety. "I don't want the bear killed, I just want him relocated," she insists. Suzanne has started lighting a campfire hoping to keep bears away from her property. Suzanne says too many nuisance bears are relocated here. She says she's worried about what will happen next: "There's children all around here and there's dogs and everything."

But officers say this is bear territory and people should be prepared for them. "I have to live with them and I understand that, but I think that FWC has to be more compassionate and work with us as well," Parker says. Only two bears have been relocated to the forest since June.
