Shutdown affecting local veterans, 'Operation Stand Down' working to help

(WJBK) -

Despite efforts in Congress to prevent it from happening, local veterans are feeling the effects of the shutdown. 'Operation Stand Down' is working to make sure homeless veterans have the services they need.

For two days out of the year homeless veterans can connect with all the services need, whether it's seeing a doctor, finding housing, obtaining a valid ID or just eating a warm meal. All that can be found under one roof.

During the shutdown the VA's regional office in Detroit is closed to the public. But the VA medical center and community clinics are still up and running

The shutdown began Oct. 1 after President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats rejected Republican demands to defund the Affordable Care Act.
