It's a sick and twisted crime. A Tempe woman has been arrested, accused of mutilating and killing both a dog and a cat.

According to court documents, Jasmine Shafer killed her canine terrier mix, and killed a cat belonging to her friend.

The dog's body was found in the backyard of her home on Sept. 22. His legs had been broken and his throat was slit, and there were wounds to the right side of his torso.

On Sept. 28, police say Shafer killed her friend's cat. The feline's body was found in an alley across from her house, and the animal had lacerations to its belly.

Shafer had a conversation with one of her friends where she admitted to killing both animals, which was recorded and turned into police. In that conversation, Shafer allegedly said she would get away with everything and that her grandparents, who lived with her, didn't know it was her who killed the animals.

A necropsy showed the animals' injuries were intentionally caused.

While serving a search warrant, officers found numerous items of drug paraphernalia, according to documents.

Shafer was booked into the Tempe City Jail on two counts of animal cruelty and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.
