Some Central Florida parents with kids in public, private and home schools are preparing to attend public hearings regarding Common Core. It's a curriculum change that all students will undergo.
Laura Carusco is a volunteer with a group called Florida Parents Against Common Core. She wants everyone to know about public hearings scheduled by the Board of Education next week.
"We're asking parents to come out and at least make their presence known and their opposition to the common core standards which we really believe undermine parental authority."
Laura says the state is limiting parents to speak for only 3 minutes about what they oppose in the lessons. She thinks there needs to be more transparency.
"Share concerns like things such as costs and the testing that's associated with things associated with common core as well. They need to have input into these standards that so dramatically affect their children's education."
Parents like Jeffery Scott say they attended a meeting on Thursday to understand how Common Core would affect his children.
"Initially, depressed because of over reach of government into the educational system."
He says meetings like this one, prepare him for the future.
"Educate other parents and go to when I can these meetings and be armed so I can speak out."
Laura believes every parent has a right to speak out about their concerns regarding Common Core, "Really undermines parental authority over their own children's education."
