Two Down Syndrome students favorites for homecoming court

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

It's a big night of football.  School spirit is extra high at one Central Florida high school, not just because it's homecoming, but also because of who is on the homecoming court.

The homecoming king and queen at West Orange High School favorites are two kids who might not have had a chance to win a popularity contest anywhere else.

Having Down Syndrome could have easily set Semone Adkins and Travjuan Hunter -- better known as "Bubba" -- apart.  Instead, students put them on the homecoming court.

The "Best Buddies" Club, which encourages friendships between special needs and mainstream kids, nominated Semone and Bubba.

Student government president Isabelle Hadley says the senior class did the rest.

"Usually best buddies, they always have nominees, but they never make it on court so this year is cool and special that we finally get to have them on court."

Teacher Jim Mattingly says each took the news with their signature style.

"Travjuan is just such a natural extrovert and he just lit up with enthusiasm," said Mattingly. "She's getting more and more comfortable all the time, and this has been a great experience for her."

While the nominations say something about the pair's personalities, Mattingly said it also speaks volumes about the students who have chosen to embrace them.

"They just treat them like any body else and it's refreshing."
