Pups and pounds: Introducing 'Fat Camp' for dogs

The battle of the bulge is not just being fought by humans anymore. According to the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention, nearly 55 percent of our dogs and cats are overweight or obese.
Enter: Doggy Fat Camp.

One of the camps is at the five-star luxury pet resort Morris Animal Inn in Morristown, New Jersey. They prefer the term 'weight-loss and fitness camp' so as not to offend any of the four-legged clients, who work out twice a week.

Workout activities include treadmill trots, swim sessions, doggie play sessions, nature trail hikes; even "doga" and "pawlates."

But programs like these are pricey and experts say they're only worth it if pet owners uphold their end of the bargain, too.

A veterinarian and founder of the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention, Dr. Ernie Ward, says, "Just solving that end of the equation isn't really curing the entire problem, because we still have pet parents who are giving their pets too much food and too many treats." Ward says the more important decision you can make to change your pet's health is what you are feeding it.

So what's on the menu at the camp? Yogurt veggie parfait.
