Cocoa man dies in airboat accident

Posted: Updated:

Family and friends are mourning the death of a Cocoa man. A spokesperson from Florida Fish and Wildlife said officers found the body of Ralph "Danny" Oliver early Sunday morning. It's just so hard," said Jenny Cooley. "It's like the river has taken another man."

Relatives were too shaken up to speak with FOX35. Friend Jenny Cooley said Oliver loved the water and he loved hanging out at Lone Cabbage Fish Camp in Cocoa. Cooley said Oliver always had a kind word for everyone.

"He was just a really good guy," said Cooley. "He wouldn't want everybody to be sad. He'd want us to really celebrate his life. He'd probably yell at us if we were crying, but it's just so hard."

FWC officials said the 61-year-old was part of an airboat club. On Saturday, members headed south on the St John's River from Paw Paw mound. Investigators said Oliver was the last one in the group, hit a concrete pylon near the SR-528 bridge around 11pm. Investigators said Oliver's son called 911 after his father didn't return home.

The Brevard County Sheriff's Office dive team searched the water. Deputies recovered Oliver's body around 9:30a.m. on Sunday."I just feel for his wife," said Cooley. "They've been married for so long, and that was his sweetheart. It's really sad."

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
