A special needs boy is in critical condition but stabilizing after being struck by a pick-up truck, according to a spokesperson with the Florida Highway Patrol.

The boy, believed to be five to seven years in age, was hit as he ran across U.S. Highway 1 near Indian River Dr. in Sharpes, Sgt. Kim Montes said.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. on Monday and resulted in the brief closure of northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1.

Witnesses said the driver of the truck swerved but was unable to avoid striking the child.  The driver will not be charged, according to Montes.

The boy was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando.
