Good samaritans help catch an alleged crook

Posted: Updated:

Orlando, Florida- An alleged thief is behind bars at the Orange County Jail, after some good samaritans helped a store clerk.

Quwanna Harris was working the register at the Family Dollar Store in Orlando, when she noticed a man trying to walk out with stolen merchandise, "He came full speed and I was standing right here, telling him stop. And then he like brushed me into the thing and my hand was caught in the thing and he was trying to get out." This mother of two never thought the stranger would put up a fight, "What was going through your mind when this guy pushed you by the doorway? I was in shock I couldn't believe it, I was scared, I didn't know what else was going to happen. I didn't know if he had a weapon or not. It was just frightening to me."

But as Quwanna yelled out loud, a lady shopping in the store ran to help, trying to keep the crook from getting away, "We was like going back and forth with a tussling match back and forth with his bike, because he was on a bike trying to get away."

Quwanna says the suspect was tackled right outside the store by a man who works across the street. "He was about this tall, twice my weight." Joshua Capps looked out the window of his motel and saw what was happening, "He tried to get up and run and I grabbed him, threw him to the ground and put him in a choke hold so he couldn't go no where. And waited from the cops to come." He was especially concerned because it was his wife Martha, who was helping Quwanna catch the crook, "She definitely got some fight in her for a little woman. Are you surprised? Oh no, I know that about her, she's a tough one."

Meanwhile, the Family Dollar clerk says thanks a million to the couple that helped her, "If it wasn't for her and her husband, it could have been a worse situation. So I'm really grateful." Joshua says, "She's real nice to everybody, she tries to help people if they need it and that's why I had to go help her. Because she tries to help me if I need it."

Police charged 57 year old James Hood with robbery, battery and theft.
