PHOENIX -

An unusual story out of North Phoenix -- crooks broke into a house Tuesday morning, but when police officers arrived at the scene, it was the homeowner who had some explaining to do.

Police found 250 pounds of marijuana inside the home near 31st Avenue and Beardsley that's about a half mile from Goldwater High School and a LDS church.

Undercover officers carried out 10 bales of pot which was stashed inside the house.

"It's just kind of surprising, I guess," said Anna Zimmer, who lives next door.

Zimmer saw people going in and out of  the house, but never imagined drugs were being hidden inside.

"You wouldn't even think so.. our neighborhood is pretty quiet."

Quiet -- until 2 a.m. when police say three armed gunmen forced their way into the house.  A man staying inside the home tried to run out of the home and that's when one of the suspects fired his gun.

"I heard a gunshot, then I kind of freaked out," said Cale Zimmer, who was asleep in bed, then got up to lock the back door.

"I saw like a shadow jump over my wall... I saw the guy like laying next to the sliding glass door."

It was the guy who tried to run.  He told police he doesn't live in the house and was just visiting when the home invasion happened.  The three armed men got away.  Zimmer called the police and when officers arrived, they found $125,000 worth of pot inside.

"It's definitely scary.. I want to definitely protect my wife and if I had kids that would just blow my mind," said Cale.

Police arrested 23-year-old Christopher Romero.  Again, he told police he was visiting the house, but didn't live there.  Authorities say they found a gun and a half pound of meth in his car.
