Photo of wounded soldier delivering salute goes viral

Posted: Updated:

(WJBK) -- It's the salute seen around the world.

A photo of a wounded soldier saluting his commanding officer while receiving his Purple Heart Medal while laying in a hospital bed has gone viral.

U.S. Army Ranger Josh Hargis of Ohio was severely wounded in a bombing in Afghanistan which killed four of his fellow soldiers. Hargis' wife says everyone in the room assumed her husband was unconscious.

But through the pain, Hargis struggled to move his right hand and lift it in a saluting position.

A doctor tried to restrain the wounded soldier's right arm. But as you can see, it didn't work.

This was Corporal Hargis' fourth tour in Afghanistan.
