Three vacant apartment buildings in Atlanta torn down

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The city of Atlanta began knocking down three abandoned apartment buildings on Wednesday.

Authorities said the buildings had been magnets for crime, while community members said they have been eyesores for years. One of the vacant, blighted apartment buildings is on Joseph Boone Boulevard, while two others are on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

"Boone Blvd has been the subject of a lot of conversation, mostly – unfortunately -- about public safety," said Atlanta City Councilman Ivory Young. "As we have in most of our communities, we have been plagued with vacant and abandoned properties."

Long-time residents have visions of parks and affordable housing to replace the blight. They said Wednesday is like Christmas in October.

"I am so ecstatic. I've been praying for Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to look like its name. It should just bust Atlanta wide open," said Catherine Beckmon.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed was on-hand as crews began to tear down the buildings.

The demolition project is expected to take about 30 days to complete.
